Moving home is a stressful experience. You have a lot of things to take care of – from ensuring that all your belongings are safely packed to getting them efficiently transported to your new home.

It is not uncommon to forget to ensure that your pet is cared for amidst all the chaos. Prepare beforehand to ensure the safest and smoothest journey for your pet.

Be Sympathetic

The chaos of moving can be stressful for pets too. Try to be as sympathetic as possible with your pets to reduce their stress. Give them several pats, rubs and hugs and talk to them whenever possible to show that you understand their stress.

Assign a family member to look after the pet on the day of moving. Keep your pet well-fed in its own room. Have the movers pack the pet’s room in the end.

Pack Pet Identity and Documents

If you have pet-related documents such as pet passports and microchip IDs, ensure that they are updated. In case, you do not have any pet ID, it is recommended that you use IDs such as a tag or collar with updated details.

Some Do’s and Don’ts when Moving Home with Pets

• Do not feed your pet less than 2 hours before moving
• Arrange for a secure carrier to carry the pet with you. If it’s a dog, and you can’t accommodate a carrier in your vehicle, have your pet seated in the vehicle and secure it with a seatbelt. Consider having a dog guard, which creates partitioned space for your pet in the back.
• Make sure the pet space is well-ventilated. Pets such as rabbits can suffer from heat strokes if exposed to too much heat. It is recommended to have your rabbit in a well-designed rabbit case.
• Take multiple breaks during the journey so your pet can comfortably drink water, stretch and relieve itself.
• Unpack your pet’s room first when you move into your new home
• Allow your pets to get accustomed to the new home at their own pace. Carry a familiar toy. The familiar scent will help keep them comfortable, calm and secure. They will outgrow the habit soon and will get accustomed to the new home.
